About The Team

Our Heritage

UBRacing is one of the first Formula Student teams in the UK, pre-dating the UK competition. The team was founded in 1997 and started by University of Birmingham Mechanical Engineering undergraduate, Blake Siegler. With the help of Carl Hingley BEM, the team's now retired Senior Technician. Initially there was no competition in the UK, so we first competed in Michigan, USA in 1998. The Formula Student competition was brought to the UK thanks to a successful pitch by UBRacing, and the Universities of Leeds and Hertfordshire teams. Formula Student UK (FSUK) has been a popular international competition since.
In 2023, we were invited to bring UBR1, our first car, to FSUK to celebrate the competition's 25th anniversary. We were able to run UBR01 at the competition and showcase our heritage. We have kept up our original car and we still drive this car at testing every year.

OUR CARS

As of 2024, we have designed and manufactured 27 race cars. The designs have gone through many iterations since 1997. We started with a combustion car with a steel space-frame chassis, and UBR27, our most recent car, was an electric vahicle with a carbon monocoque. We transitioned to an electric powertrain in 2021, and although this was a difficult transition, we have been improving our EV design since.

Our Alumni

As one of the oldest Formula Student teams in the UK, we have many alumni who have gone on to do great things. We have had alumni go to work at many Formula 1 teams including Redbull, Mercedes, Mclaren, Aston Martin and Williams. The team has good connections with our alumni and they visit the team often, for example by coming to our design review and car launch.
